Snorkelling and Freediving

in & around

Cape Town South Africa:

To experience the ocean in its purest form, one would need to explore the water world in the most natural way possible. To dive into the living water with a single breath lets you experience life underwater like never before. Wildlife comes closer; you become one with the water. The agility and flexibility that come with this freedom is second to none. The ocean is our playground, the sea life our friends. It comes as no surprise that the most ancient form of diving brings you closest to the heart of the ocean.

Since the time of the ancient Greek sponge divers, freediving has evolved. The newest techniques and training make freediving safe and can be taught to any person who wants to explore the underwater world. Freediver incorporates up-to-date teaching techniques and physiology to make the course safe and enjoyable for all individuals. Our Freediver instructors are highly qualified and specialised in the field of freediving to ensure your safety and provide exciting experiences.

Come explore our oceans with us in the most natural way to dive. Come play in our backyard with our freediving team.

Cape Town is home to many amazing snorkeling destinations. The underwater life is rich with marine creatures like fur seals, blue sharks, mako sharks. Seven gills sharks, whales and dolphins. Simply dive into the blue waters and take a nice look at the exceptional marine life in Cape Town. Though Cape Town has temperate waters, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find any snorkeling opportunities. Cape Town is practically beaming with snorkeling destinations. The snorkeling community has especially grown in the past few years, which is mainly due to the popularity of fur seal colonies.

About Adrian Meiring – Founder of IN BETWEEN THE KELP, Qualified PADI Freediving Instructor & Snorkeling guide

I was born in Durban, I have been swimming since the age of 2 (my mom got tired of me always just charging into large bodies of water). I was given my first snorkel set at the age of 5, my brother and I partnered up to explore Scottburgh. Around the age of 13, my brother (1 year older than me) and I posted an advert on the caravan notice board that we were happy to lead snorkel tours. The tours were a hit, we got mainly teenagers and had an absolute blast with groups of about 5 plus peeps at a time. Around the age 23, Lime stone and Vetches pier (Durban) became my all time favourite shore entries where I learned to spearfish and started some serious DYN (no fin) training.

I moved to Cape town around the age of 27, which is when I fell in love with SCUBA diving. After reaching PADI rescue diver, I started leading peeps on SCUBA dive tours freelancing for Pisces (PADI), Divers choices (NAUI) and Dive Buddies (SSI). This is when I learned about the unique differences between the different dive association techniques and approaches to teaching and leading. Working as a freelancer wasn’t sustainable cash wise and I came up with another way to generate cash whilst saving the oceans. I started diving for sinkers and selling the bulk weight to different dive stores that would then melt and cast dive weights. I also did the odd jobs in the harbor by cutting off ropes from the propellers of the fishing boats.

I moved to Pretoria from age 37 to 42 where my life started falling apart. Thanks to a rather dirty divorce, I lost pretty much everything including my SCUBA gear. I finally realized that the ocean had to be a part of my life and decided to move back to Cape town. I landed a month before COVID hit, during this time I used my freediving skills to dive out sinkers again. This is when I met Martin, who needed a training buddy for his DYNB sessions. These sessions became a 3 days per week regime where we started to get noticed by some peeps. The training group grew into what is now known as Dynamic Apnea with the main trainer/coaches being Martin, Cam and myself. Being a strictly training group, I decided it was time to launch a freediving dive tour business (In between the kelp) which has become a place where adults & kiddies can learn about the ocean whilst snorkeling in a safe environment. We lead more advanced freediving tours as well, creating a video of the clients to make it as memorable as possible.
