Why do we manufacture Freediving Lanyards from 316 Stainless Steel:
Freediving lanyards are essential safety devices for freedivers. They connect the diver to the diving line, preventing them from drifting away due to currents or disorientation. These lanyards must be durable, reliable, and resistant to the harsh underwater environment.
The use of 316 stainless steel in the manufacture of these lanyards serves several purposes:
Corrosion Resistance: 316 stainless steel is an austenitic type of stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion. It’s particularly resistant to chloride corrosion, which is essential in marine environments where saltwater can quickly degrade other materials.
Strength: Stainless steel is a strong, durable material that can withstand the physical stresses that a lanyard might experience during a dive, including pressure, force from the diver, and general wear and tear.
Non-reactivity: 316 stainless steel is a non-reactive metal, which means it won’t react with the water, air, or human skin. This reduces the risk of skin irritation for the diver and also means that the lanyard won’t degrade or release harmful substances into the water.
Hygiene: Stainless steel is easy to clean and sanitize, which is important for any piece of diving equipment.
However, even though 316 stainless steel has all these properties, it’s important to rinse and dry freediving lanyards after each use to maintain their functionality and longevity. This helps to prevent salt and other debris from accumulating on the lanyard, which could eventually compromise the material.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that while our clips and other hardware components are manufactured from 316 stainless steel, the actual lanyard cord is also made from stainless steel cable, unlike many other manufacturers who use materials like nylon or polyester for flexibility and comfort.
Why a High Quality Freediving Safety Lanyard is important:
Freediving safety lanyards are crucial tools for ensuring safety during freediving. There are a few reasons why it is so important to have a high-quality lanyard:
Safety Line Attachment: The main function of a lanyard is to secure the diver to the diving line. This is critical because it prevents the diver from drifting away from the line due to strong currents, disorientation, or in the worst-case scenario, unconsciousness.
Ascend Assistance: In the case of disorientation or physical distress, a diver can use the lanyard to guide their ascent along the dive line. This can be crucial for divers who might become disoriented, particularly in deep or dark waters.
Emergency Situations: In the event of an emergency, such as blackout or loss of motor control, a safety lanyard can aid in quick recovery. Surface safety personnel can quickly locate and retrieve the diver by following the lanyard connected to the dive line.
Depth Regulation: The lanyard also helps divers to regulate their depth, preventing them from going deeper than planned. This can be a vital tool in preventing potential issues like nitrogen narcosis, decompression sickness, or barotrauma.
However, the reliability and effectiveness of a freediving safety lanyard are highly dependent on its quality. A lanyard that is poorly made or made from substandard materials could fail at a critical moment, putting the diver’s life at risk. High-quality lanyards, on the other hand, are durable, resistant to harsh sea water conditions, have reliable and secure fastenings, and are comfortable to wear. Therefore, investing in a high-quality freediving safety lanyard is an investment in safety and peace of mind.
